2014′s shaping up tobe a big year for Lil Wayne with his Tha Carter V coming and his supposed retirement looming.

For their latest issue, ESPN explores the link between Wayne and sports, his slight dislike for the Heat, retelling how Cortez and Kobe came up with launching the “Carter Season” promo and more. But the most telling statements came in regards to the album itself.

Tha Carter V is about growth, flat-out,” Wayne explains. “My thoughts are wiser. I still say what I want to say — it just sounds better and makes more sense. That all comes with growth and maturity.” He continued by explaining how his music isn’t driven by messages but just a desire to say what’s on his mind.

“Music is about self,” he shared. “It’s supposed to be personal, a reflection of me, unless you have somebody writing it for you, and everybody know I’m not that artist. I’m not sending a message because that message may not get across. Whatever message you take from it is your choice.”

So far, Wayne sounds much more coherent and focused than in some of his previous outings. Previously, he was venturing into a more experimental space whereas now he seems re-energized mentally and raps like his only desire is to reclaim his position near the top as a lyricist. Now, will the quotes here and vibe we’ve heard thus far carry through to the whole album? That remains to be seen and heard.
