Thrift Shop: Roommates Find Thousands In Cash Stashed In Secondhand Couch

This all kind of seems like an episode of Boy Meets World. A few New York City-based roommates – Reese Werkhoven, Cally Guasti and Lara Russo – pitch in to buy a couch from their local Salvation Army, find $41K in $100 bills hidden in the cushions, as well as an envelope with a woman’s name on it.

Moral dilema! Do you keep the money or return it?

CBS New York reports that our heroes did the right thing.

“The entitlement very quickly went away with finding that notice with her name on it. Because we didn’t earn that money,” Guasti said.

“I’m like ‘I found something that I think is yours’ and she’s like ‘what?!’ and I’m like ‘I found a couch’ and then she’s like ‘oh my God I left a lot of money in that couch,’” said Werkhoven.

The friends said the elderly woman, who wanted to remain anonymous, told them she had stashed the money in the couch for years and that family members who didn’t know had mistakenly donated the couch.

The elderly woman would give the trio $1,000 for their troubles.

Be honest: do you keep the money, or do you give it back to its rightful owner? Hand to the bible, I’m returning what I found, but not before buying myself a nice dinner.
