Chris Johnson Inks Deal With New York Jets

By J. Tinsley / 04.16.14

All last season the running sentiment around Chris Johnson was that it was going to be his last as Tennessee Titan. Turns out my gut feeling was right. My boy Johnathan Tillman noted a few weeks back CJ2K received a hard lesson in business in the NFL, where contracts are awarded for what a player may do instead of what’s already done.

The New York Jets were willing to take that chance by offering Johnson a two-year contract worth $9M. The terms state the deal is structured with an $8M base and the extra million being based off incentives. CJ drew little interest on the open market aside from the Jets perhaps due to surgery in January to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee (which he injured in Week 3 last year and kept playing).

Johnson is, however, the fifth back in league history to rush for at least 1,000 yards in his first six seasons. That’s what the Jets are banking on as they continue to improve an otherwise boring and excruciatingly painful-to-watch offense. Pending Chris performs to the level of his capabilities, there is promise in a Johnson/Chris Ivory running back tandem. Now it’s all about if Michael Vick can stay healthy enough to get Johnson and New York’s other big name signee, Eric Decker, the ball.
