Today is a momentous occasion worthy of celebration and not just because it’s Friday. 15 years ago today Fox allowed Matt Groening, the mastermind behind the longest running primetime TV series in American history, The Simpsons, to create a totally new show.
This new endeavor featured a motley crew of individuals that would make even the strangest resident of Springfield seem like they walked off the set of Happy Days. I mean how else would you describe an alcoholic robot, a neurotic crab-man, a Jamaican uber-Bureaucrat,an evil genius centenarian, an ass-kicking one-eyed lady pilot, and a man who is his own grandfather? And that’s just the main cast and doesn’t count the countless stand-outs like Hypno-Toad, Zapp Brannigan, Amy, Morbo, and Hedonismbot (a personal favorite).
So in honor of Futurama’s rise, fall, resurrection, and then final ending (which wasn’t that bad actually), I thought it would be asked you for your favorite Futurama episode.
For me, my favorite episode will always be “Godfellas.” In the aforementioned episode the usually selfish Bender becomes both a world and god to a race of brand new life forms. The episode is ripe with things that made Futurama so remarkable. It flawlessly merged classic sci-fi tropes (and stories) with a deeply heartfelt tale, as well as forcing the viewer to contemplate some pretty weighty issues. The episode, and maybe life itself, can be encapsulated by the closing statement from “God”: “When you do things right people won’t be sure you’ve done anything at all”.
Now, chime in with your favorite episode or moment in the comments section.
