The Dungeon Family is generally known for its collection of exceptional rappers like Outkast, Killer Mike and Goodie Mob. But the Family is only as strong as its beat-makers, with Mr. DJ’s production making up part of that foundation.
Famous for being the primary co-producer and DJ for Outkast since day one, Mr. DJ’s also the mastermind behind gems like Goodie Mob’s “Black Ice,” off 1998′s Still Standing. Granted, “Black Ice” probably wouldn’t be the first Mr. DJ instrumental that comes to fans’ minds, but just listen to it. It starts with simple bouncy kick and snare, then glides into a rainy organ with spooky, spontaneous flamenco guitars that dance around the production. It’s the perfect freestyle beat: that E minor guitar and those sped-up shakers give listeners a Friday The 13th feel.
The lyrics are dope for sure. But the instrumental tells its own tale.
