Russell Wilson Is Taking His (Offseason) Talents To The Texas Rangers

By J. Tinsley / 02.27.14

Talk about living the life.

Barely a month removed from hoisting the Lombardi Trophy in New York City, Super Bowl champ Russell Wilson returns to the “playing field” on Monday. And by “playing field,” we’re talking the baseball diamond.

The Texas Rangers will welcome the jolt of celebrity star power to their spring training facility in Surprise, Arizona. Wilson should run through the morning workout regiments and – pending any unforeseen circumstances – the third-round-pick-turned-household-name will suit up for a split squad game against the Cleveland Indians.

For those not in the know, this isn’t a publicity stunt. Wilson played pro baseball as a member of the Colorado Rockies farm system in 2010 and 2011. RW3 batted .229 with five home runs in 93 professional games. Then, as the story goes, Wilson chose football over baseball, transferred to Wisconsin from North Carolina State and the Seahawks caught one of the biggest draft day steals in recent memory taking Russ with the 75th overall pick in 2012.

So why is Russ suiting up for Texas and not a Rockies or Seattle Mariners minor league affiliate? The Rangers said “what the hell” and drafted Wilson in the Triple A section of last summer’s Rule 5 Draft.

Don’t expect a Bo Jackson or Deion Sanders two sports type of endeavor from Russ, however. Football remains the first and only priority.
