Anna Gordy Gaye, Marvin Gaye’s Ex-Wife, Dies At 92

By Gotty™ / 02.02.14

Anna Gordy, sister to Motown legend Barry Gordy and first wife of Marvin Gaye, passed away on Friday at the age of 92. Her health reportedly had been in decline for the last several years.

Although she was the Motown great’s sister and held a handful of songwriting credits of her own, it was Gordy’s marriage to Marvin Gaye for which she was best known to many. The couple wed in 1963 and stayed together 14 tumultuous years before finally filing for divorce in 1973. After two years of legal proceedings, Gaye agreed to pay Gordy a percentage of money based off the sales of his next album. The result was Here, My Dear, released in 1978, a work that examined the couple’s relationship and told through Gaye’s eyes.

Recorded in Marvin’s Room in Hollywood, California from 1976 to 1978, Here… was initially panned by critics before later gaining acclaim and acceptance.
