Young Chiraq: New Documentary ‘The Field: Chicago’ Investigates City’s Emerging Music, Dark Violent Side

The Field Chicago Documentary

Once Chief Keef introduced the mainstream to his incarnation of drill music, the flood gates for hungry Chicago MCs opened for good. As a result, many listeners were turned off by the Windy City’s next generation, based on their presumed coat-tail riding of the braided rapper. Others, however, embraced the likes of Lil Durk, Lil Bibby, Lil Mouse and Katie Got Bandz – citing their authenticity alone as rationale for spins.

To clarify who’s who amidst Chi-Town’s latest wave of rappers and explain the movement behind their city’s current state of aggressiveness, WorldstarHipHop went into the thick of Chi-Town’s most dangerous neighborhoods and interviewed some of the city’s rising stars. The result was their latest documentary short, The Field: Violence, Hip-Hop and Hope in Chicago, which paints an almost frightening perspective on how and why such reckless rap can spread like wildfire.

Whether listeners appreciate the music or not, this vibrant clip justifies Chiraq rap’s drawing power and gives each of the featured MCs a more formal identity, beyond the gun-toting rhymes they’re becoming known for.
