The first pics of Nike’s Nike BHM (Black History Monh) Collection are in, and the purple and metallic gold theme is fitting for what is referred to as the celebration of royalty in sports. This year there are 23 items in the complete collection, but the standouts are the LeBron 11, the KD 6, and the Jordan Melo M10. Conspicuously missing are the Kobe 9s, since the company is sticking with a hard February 8th release date (or because not even a limited edition Kobe 9 would sell).

Nike BHM Lebron 11

Nike’s cash cow definitely gets top billing with the BHM Lebron 11. Expanding on the Black History Month print that was showcased in the 2013 pack, The majority of the shoe is black with purple accents. Gold makes an appearance on the tongue, the swoosh on the upper and in the form of flaking in the purple sole. There’s a subdued animal-style spotting that’s interesting, but most of the positives of the shoe are outweighed by the gaudy lion insignias found on random portions of the upper could cause it to be confused with a Thundercats PE. Maybe if the MLK print was a little more subdued the design wouldn’t be as visually jarring, but the use of white make it the boss of the three signature kicks.

Nike BHM KD 6

Next up to bat is the KD BHM 6 in a similar colorway. There’s way more purple in this shoe, but the print doesn’t stand out as much thanks to using UV spotting as opposed to another color. These could almost pass as the bizarro world version of the Christmas KD 6s, although the color on the BHMs work a little better for year round wear. Super loud liquid gold accents would give a chintzy feel to the KD so the matte tone used stands as a major plus. Definitely can’t wait to see these in person and I imagine Prince is somewhere nodding and air humping in approval.

Jordan BHM Melo M10 1

The hands down winner of the three pairs is the Jordan BHM Melo M10. The purple and gold serve only as accents making appearances in the laces and sockliner with a gold heel cup, with the major colors being black and a felt/nubuck shadow grey upper. The BHM print and an icy sole complete the well-executed shoe, although the bright gold heel cup reminds us of something that would be on a pair of DaDa Supreme C Webbs. We’re not too mad at that though so thumbs up for the design on these.

100% of the net proceeds from the 2014 BHM collection go to the new Nike Even Higher Fund. There’s some hits and some misses, but there’s something for everyone and we can all agree for once that a collection selling out is a good thing.

The full 2014 BHM Collection releases Feb 1st. More detailed photos on the pages that follow. Take a look and let us know which ones you’ll be picking up.
