100-Word Review: Smif-N-Wessun’s ‘Born And Raised’

Smif-N-Wessun, like many other Brooklyn emcees, have always been influenced by reggae music and culture. They take that influence to a–mostly–natural progression on their latest EP Born And Raised. The six song EP was produced entirely by Beatnick & K-Salaam, who added a warm live instrumental vibe to each track. Featured performers like Junior Reid, Jr. Kelly, and Jahdan also lend legitimacy to the reggae/hip-hop mash-up. Tek and Steele are still grimy Brooklynites, but much of the lyrical content here is focused on social commentary, as evidenced by tracks like the first single “Solid Ground,” featuring Junior Reid. Overall the EP is a bit of a stretch for the Boot Camp duo, but is natural and unforced.
