Anthony Davis, Jrue Holiday Lead Pelicans Past Blazers 110-108

By J. Tinsley / 12.31.13

A record of 24-7 isn’t child’s play. Portland has been arguably the best squad in basketball all year, but closing out the final hours of 2013 won’t be remembered as their calling card. Chris Bosh’s 37-point, 10-rebound performance on Saturday, including the game-winning three pointer, was the first punch to the gut.

Now the Blazers are owners of their first losing streak of the season as Jrue Holiday, Anthony Davis and the Pelicans used a game-winning shot of their own from Tyreke Evans to escape with a 110-108 victory. Crazy stat lines were bursting from both sides with LaMarcus Aldridge going for 28-8 and Damian Lillard notching 29 points and five assists (while also nailing what was the game-tying three).

Your starting point guard shooting 28 shots probably isn’t how Red Auerbach and John Wooden would envision the game had they still be around the day, but that’s the world we live in and Jrue Holiday did just that en route to a 31-point, 13-assist night. But when you’re talking about the Pelicans, their hopes, dreams and future rest on the unibrow of Anthony Davis whose 27 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks not only paced New Orleans. Keep this kid healthy, more importantly, it’s what we can all expect for the next decade plus.

The victory pulls N’awlins within a game of .500 at 14-15. Meanwhile, the road doesn’t become any kinder to Portland. They close out 2013 at Oklahoma City.
