Songs like “Wake Up Everybody” from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes don’t get made anymore. Aside from being a tradionally sound piece of instrumentation that warms the soul, the Philly group delivers a laundry list of American institutions that need to step their game to help the word as a whole. With well intentions, lead singer Teddy Pendergrass focuses his finger-pointing specifically at builders, teachers and doctors – with the PHD department getting some serious burden thrown their way.

“Wake up to all the doctors, make the old people well. They’re the ones who suffer and catch all the hell. Because, they don’t have too long, before their judgment day. So, won’t you make them happy, before they pass away.”

Considering society has flipped the scripts quite a bit since the song dropped as the title track to the Blue Notes’ 1975 album, it’s hard to say how much we’ve really woken up. However, we’re pretty sure if Teddy was still kicking it, he’d have his fair share of complaints.
