Your College Football Recap, Week 10: Where Florida State Covered That Outrageous Point Spread

By TSSCrew / 11.03.13

Words by Jake Bressler

Let’s be honest here…Saturday wasn’t exactly the most eventful day in college football history. We completely understand if you fell asleep around 4:00.

But hopefully you woke up at some point, because No. 3 Florida St. issued another major statement to the rest of the country with their convincing 41-14 win over previously undefeated Miami after coming into the game a 21-point favorite. When FSU steamrolled Clemson a few weeks ago, stud quarterback Jameis Winston starred, throwing for more than 400 yards. Against the Canes, Winston threw two picks in the first half and relied on his supporting staff to keep the Seminoles in the game, especially running back Devonte Freeman, who finished with close to 200 combined yards.

This FSU team resembles some of the old Bobby Bowden squads from the ‘90s, with a plethora of blue chip talent and a genuine disdain of Miami. All is right in college football when these two teams hate each other.

Famous Jamies picked up his play in the second half, and remains locked in a tight race with Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota for the Heisman Trophy. And he’s doing all of this while probably needing some sort of glasses or contacts prescription. The ABC cameras caught Winston squinting to the sideline between plays.

The guy is like Rick “Wild Thing” Vaughn. Who knows what he could do with 20/20.

Coming into this week, Oregon and Florida St. were ranked number two and three respectively in the BCS standings. But with Duck Nation on a bye week, Florida St. might jump back into that coveted number two slot. And even though the Pac-12 and SEC are far superior to the ACC, Florida St. actually has two really quality wins now and could play Miami again in the conference title game. Basically, what I’m saying is, it’ll be damn tough to leave the Seminoles out of the National Championship game if they finish the regular season undefeated. I don’t care what else happens.

As for the other top teams, well, Bama’s playing LSU next week and Oregon’s got their long-awaited showdown with Stanford on Thursday night.

Quick Hits

– Northwestern is still winless in the Big Ten and Nebraska avoided a season-crushing loss by beating the Wildcats with this incredible Hail Mary as time expired in regulation. THE ONE RULE FOR HAIL MARYS IS TO BAT THE BALL DOWN, NOT UP.

Nebraska would have fallen to 5-3 and Bo Pelini may have joined his kush-loving brother in the ranks of the unemployed. At the very least, Cornhusker faithful would have loudly voiced their displeasure. We hope Bo celebrated the miraculous victory.

– It seems weird that a Florida vs Georgia game features two unranked teams, but I guess that’s what happens during the course of a rugged SEC schedule. Georgia running back Todd Gurley returned from an injury to score two touchdowns and lead the Bulldogs to a 23-20 win, their third straight over the Gators.

Of course, the annual Florida-Georgia game in Jacksonville is also known as The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party, and this year didn’t disappoint. Hey there, aren’t you girls too young for facelifts?

– The Ohio State Buckeyes beat the brakes off Purdue 56-0 to go 9-0. QB Braxton Miller threw for 233 yards and four TDs. Moving right along.

– Speaking of undefeated teams, No. 16 Fresno State moved to 8-0 after winning 41-23 against Nevada.

– Can this Michigan State team ball on defense or what? The Spartans held arch rival Michigan to only six points and NEGATIVE 48 YARDS RUSHING. Michigan’s offense would have been better off staying in the locker room. At least they wouldn’t have gone backwards.

MSU’s defense hasn’t given up a touchdown in the last three games, and they look more than capable of shutting down the vaunted Ohio St. attack. Michigan St. vs Ohio St. appears to be the likely matchup for the Big Ten Championship game. And, who knows, maybe the Spartans will provide OSU with the quality win they so desperately need to leapfrog a few teams in the BCS standings.

– Rich Homie Manziel only played three quarters but not before he tossed four TD passes and scuttled 49 yards for a touchdown as the Aggies dismantled UTEP 57-7.

— Missouri bounced back from their double OT loss to South Carolina last week and beat the living piss out of Tennessee. Mizzou still has a decent chance of getting to the SEC title game.

– The Illinois Fighting Illini came damn close to ending their absurdly long Big Ten losing streak. But, of course, they fell just short of beating Penn State in overtime. They’ve now lost 18 straight Big Ten games. Mercy.

– Grambling got their first win since players returned from their boycott, beating Misssissippi Valley State. In case you missed it yesterday, here’s a USA Today editorial from the Grambling State President on the school’s money problems.
