Jay Z Silent As Petition Urges Mogul To Cut Ties With Barneys Following Racial Profiling Claims

By Word / 10.25.13

Remember that time when Jay Z immediately boycotted Cristal (and thus the inception of Ace of Spades) because of racist comments the company made about rappers and something something “bling lifestyle?” Well, well, well. Now the transcendent mogul is facing serious pressure from hating ass people who hate racial profiling.

With less than a month away from the launch of Jay’s collaboration with Barneys New York, the luxury department store is now in hot water following racism claims this week. Trayon Christian, 19, claims to have been profiled by the store and even ended up in a jail cell for purchasing a $350 Ferragamo belt that Barneys thought was being purchased with a stolen card. Another shopper, 21-year-old Kayla Phillips, has come forward to say that she too was harassed when she tried to cop a $2,500 Céline bag. Hmm, sounds legit on Barneys part because us Blacks are way too poor and way too lazy to legitimately earn income. #Factsonly.

Now a petition is out, urging the influential mogul to cut ties with the discriminatory department store. But is it too late? Not too late as in this all occurred after contracts were signed and $34,000 watches were ordered up. But too late as in, is Jay too far gone to care despite this doozy of a quote from his interview with Vanity Fair?

“The middle class has been eliminated; it’s so hard to make a living now. There’s a bigger gap between the haves and have-nots, and that’s what creates the problem. It’s going to bring some sort of anger, it’s going to boil over, and there’s going to be a conflict. Everyone has to participate in this American Dream, and if everyone’s not participating, then there’s a problem. It’s not cool—the trajectory that this is going. We have to figure out how to include everyone.”

Well, Trayon and Kayla tried to participate in part of that American Dream but ahh, that didn’t go so well. As for solutions? Perhaps not doing business with stores who are anti- what you stand for is a start, no? I should also note that 25% of the sales from Jay’s partnership with Barneys will go to his non-profit foundation the Shawn Carter Foundation Scholarship. However, it’s still a very slippery slope.

As for now, Jay is keeping his mouth shut. Currently on tour in Sweden, the paps caught up with Hov on Friday for a soundbite and was instead met with a “Jay Z is not allowed to speak on this matter” quote from someone in his entourage. But here’s to hoping Jay chucks the deuce to Barneys and comes up with his own Shawn Corey Carter luxury department store. Isn’t that how it worked last time?

On a personal note though, during a “Treat Yo Self” day I went to a high-end luxury store to purchase something nice because gosh darn it I deserved it! Aside from the security guard, I was the only Black person there. I can’t say I experienced any sort of profiling as the store clerk was very sweet and helpful. But man, had I sensed just a hint of shade, I would’ve sued their pants off and then live large with my lawsuit money since being a Black woman I’m already too lazy to work. Wins all around!
