Forbes Issues Their Annual Rich Rapper Report

iHeartRadio Music Festival - Day 1 - Backstage

It’s that time of the year again, with Forbes issuing their annual Cash Kings list. Usual suspects, Puff, Jay Z, and Dr. Dre round out the top three slots, with little of their revenue coming from actual record sales. The trends of endorsements, licensing, and of course, overpriced headphones, looks to still be generating vast amounts of money.

There are also some big surprises. How Nicki Minaj clocked in at number 4, with $29 million is beyond me. Ludacris also sold $12 million worth of Soul headphones/Beats knockoffs, and King Kendrick Lamar had a successful year of touring (and of course a very successful major label debut) to crack the Forbes list for the first time at slot number 14. Lil Jon also raked in $6 million from DJing over 100 shows through the year (and presumably from leftover royalties on “Get Low”).

The other notorious tourer, Tech N9ne banked $7.5 million through concert tickets, and merch sales, despite still never selling a single major-label record in his career. On a related note, he also admitted to marking up shirts that cost just $3 to manufacture, up to $25. That’s over 700% in profit margin. Think about that one before you go shelling out your money for artist merchandise the next time you go to a show.
