Homemade rap music isn’t a new concept. Then again, in recent years, the music has seen a sizable movement from studios to households worldwide. You’d think the bells and whistles a studio provides would get lost in the fray. Yet Detroit luminary Black Milk utilizes his living space to have his cake and eat it too.

Black’s sit down with Engadget shows the producer keeping his setup pretty basic. An iMac fitted with Pro Tools, an MPC 3000, Technics SL 1200 turntable and a few extra pieces of gear are all he needs to get down. So, are you feeling better about your Maschine/dingy, hand-me-down turntable/not quite legal DAW combo? You should.

His arrangement isn’t all that different from his layout earlier in his career. The resemblance doesn’t stop the material from being interesting for fans and home producers alike. Also, there’s something great about seeing a noted producer creating good music without a huge array of equipment. The realization further proves creativity trumps whatever tools one uses to make music.
