If the dates line up, this footage of Drake doing all the things a normal 18-year-old Toronto TV star does was filmed two years before Room For Improvement and roughly four years before Young Money came a’ knockin’. Degrassi Unscripted essentially moonlights the role of MTV Cribs as Young Aubrey shows us what life was like for the kid who was known as “Wheelchair Jimmy” long before the international fame. He pushed a 2004 Acura, snuck his grandma chocolate and lived in a swanky basement set up in his mama’s spot (that housed his infamous Drizzy sweaters!).
There’ll be a plethora of tidbits to take away from the clip and use at the next Drake roasting session, but kudos to buddy for seeing his dream of making music come to fruition. That freestyle or whatever it was he kicks halfway through wasn’t exactly telling of Grammys and endless #1 singles eight years later.
The phrase “started from the bottom” makes a lot more sense now for those who may have failed to see the subjective meaning (or just didn’t want to because, well, it’s Drake). It’s not the bottom as in rundown apartments in the hood with no electricity and living off food stamps. He literally lived at the bottom of his mom’s house. Still not a good enough explanation? Dah well.
Nevertheless, grandma putting on for Toronto and Tennessee with the Lil Jon ad-lib at the end was pure gold though. Pure f’n gold.
