The Internet is buzzing about Jay-Z’s pre-release platinum status after word got out that Samsung bought one million copies of Magna Carta Holy Grail for $5 a pop to give away for free. But it looks like Jay’s going to need one million legit purchases of Magna Carta to go platinum because Nielsen is still playing by the #oldrules.
Speaking with MTV, a Nielsen SoundScan rep says, “Nielsen doesn’t count bulk sales.” As in, one cannot just buy up an insane amount of albums and give them away as freebies and expect for the sales to count. The rep explained that the method was different from Walmart purchasing albums in bulk because the retail giant actually sells the records to consumers after purchasing.
Jay’s none too happy about this rule. In a rare tweet sent out Monday, Jiggaman tweeted “If 1 Million records gets SOLD and billboard doesnt report it, did it happen? Ha. #newrules #magnacartaholygrail Platinum!!! VII IV XIII.”
Jay’s label, Universal Music Group, is reportedly trying to get the Samsung sales to count. #newrules
