Brooklyn Finally Renames A Park In Adam “MCA” Yauch’s Honor

By Ryan J. / 05.03.13

Almost a year to the day since Beastie Boy Adam “MCA” Yauch passed away from throat cancer, the MC will receive a permanent tribute in his hometown of Brooklyn: a park named in his honor.

The former Palmetto Park, off State Street in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood, will be formally renamed to “Adam Yauch Park” today after a push by the Brooklyn Heights Blog gained traction on social media last year. Brooklyn Borough president Marty Markowitz, Councilman Steve Levin, Parks Commissioner Veronica White and, of course, Ad-Rock and Mike D. will be present at the park’s State Street location to conduct the renaming ceremony.

Fans initially wanted to use nearby Squibb Park as the dedicated public space, but the park’s honoring of another famous Brooklynite, pharmaceutical luminary Edward Robinson Squibb, put a kibosh on that idea.

But Esquire.com’s Mike Nizza comments that Palmetto Park might actually be a more symbolic location: “Just a few blocks to the west was the waterfront, and the Manhattan skyline beyond. Just outside is Atlantic Avenue, leading east into the parts of Brooklyn where so much great hip-hop would come later.” Plus, Palmetto Park was such a dumb name for a park in New York City, as there probably isn’t a palmetto tree within 500 miles of the metropolitan area.

New Yorkers and fans can reach the park by taking the N or R trains to Court Street or the 2, 3, 4 or 5 trains to Borough Hall. Just bring some Brass Monkeys to pour in Yauch’s honor.
