In Search Of Sneaker Freaker Magazines

By Gotty™ / 04.22.13

When things get boring or too hectic with shoe releases, a lot of times I go sleuthing around on different quests still related to footwear. Sometimes that means trying to find an older model that should be long gone (and thus more fun to try to obtain), then there’s times when I’ll go digging around for print materials. Usually, that means old posters and ads or picking up reading material. My last quest turned up a goldmine.

It started out with an order of Sneaker Freaker’s Issue 24, one that had a massive feature on ’90s trainers. For anyone living the U.S., you’re probably aware that shipping costs plus the wait for an issue can be expensive and long. Well, my initial order didn’t arrive after a month’s wait but the SF staff dispatched another copy. And with it came an itch for back issues.

But buying them directly from SF cost too damn much. Same for eBay, if and when issues do happen to turn up. And that’s where the real search began.

Plenty of sneaker shops in the US stock the “bookazine” but none seemed to have older stock just laying around. A first call lead me to one shop, who directed me to another before I finally ended up linking with a shop owner who said “I think I know the guy you want.”

The guy turned out to be the North American distributor for Sneaker Freaker and he had years and years of old issues on hand. Tough to find issues, ones with multiple or special covers, some dating back to the mid-2000s. Just old print, exactly what I wanted. With US-based shipping, the costs were far cheaper (plus times faster) and pretty much wholesale prices. And he was liquidating old stock. Right now, the following issues are available: 10, 11, 13, 15, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25. $6 per issue or deals for ordering 25 ($5.50) and 50 ($5.00). Compared to the standard issue price of $10, the deal’s sweet. Save a few more bucks by ponying up with friends.

At this point, I introduce you to the plug. If you’re interested, please email send an email to mlapilusa@gmail.com and tell’em Gotty™ sent you.
