De La Soul Will Be Releasing A New Single Every Month

By Gotty™ / 04.09.13

The world hasn’t had much new material from De La Soul in oodles of years. However, that will all change beginning next week. That’s when the group will debut “Get Away (feat. the spirit of Wu-Tang),” the first in a series of monthly singles to be released via YouTube and social media.

While the group has consistently done shows and festival performances, they haven’t recorded a full length album since 2004′s The Grind Date. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, group member Maseo described how the new track fits into today’s music world.

“I think it’s a great record to reintroduce ourselves with,” Maseo, the group’s DJ, told Rolling Stone in an interview from Los Angeles before a show Wednesday. “It’s pretty much reflecting on the state of hip-hop at this moment. Everything is redundant. Everything sounds the same. No real lyrical content. Everybody’s just doing business, not really creating.”

Releasing via social networks makes sense for the group, since, you know, a huge contingent of their fans are rap nerds who live a portion of their lives online, present company included. The group members have always been active online because I can remember when Posdnuos shared and commented on one of our old writeups on MySpace, which quickly became the highlight of my week. Today, they’re on Twitter (Hey, Mase!) and keep a sort of updated Tumblr, where fans can stay in tune with the trio’s touring and other shenanigans. More recently, Pos and Dave formed First Serve and delivered a ton of content via social networks. So, they know a thing or two about the workings of the web and servicing music to fans.

So why singles? Maseo explained that bite-sized audio snacks “would be more impressionable than dropping an album at this present day in music.” He went on to say the songs would most likely serve as a lead to an album titled You’re Welcome.

Whatever they do, I’m glad they’re back. Let’s hope that Crocker rocks, which odds our it surely will.
