Big Sean Ft. Common – “Switch Up”

By Greg Whitt / 04.05.13

In an alternate reality, Big Sean and the “Take It E-Z” era, Heineken swigging, Common Sense would make a fun ass song. The pair’s high-pitched voices, verbal tics, and similarly nimble flows would go together like tequila and bad decisions.

Sean’s second single “Switch Up” features this dimension’s Common, and the result is a little different. The song is still fun, but if listeners are anything like me, they may have a hard time watching the guy that made Resurrection veer into his G.O.O.D. music little bro’s lane. The production works better, and is also a blend of old and new, as the Treated Crew’s Million $ Mano links up with Common’s original producer No I.D. to create a frenetic backdrop.

While it’s unfair to pigeonhole artists into what you think they should do, or how they should sound, it often takes time to get used to their forays into unfamiliar territory. Then again, this upbeat collaboration has enough energy that if you have the right speakers and the right company, it probably won’t even matter.
