On August 1, the United States Postal Service will discontinue its first-class Saturday delivery service, ending 150 years of people crossing their fingers for birthday money from grandma for Saturday boozing activities. The move hopes to save the USPS $2 billion per year and probably still doesn’t fix their financial problems (see Esquire‘s great recent article on why we shouldn’t ditch the USPS).
In any case, what the USPS will start this year is a menswear line. Yes, that is correct: a government- and Constitution-advocated agency will try its hand at the fashion game. The delivery service will name its line “Rain Heat & Snow” and has enlisted Cleveland-based company Wahconah to help create the designs.
What will an everyman, all-weather, utilitarian piece of USPS-approved couture bring you? Well, for one, you can use it with your iPod. From The Cut: “Spokesman Roy Betts told Yahoo! News that, ‘If you like your iPod, you can plug it right into your jacket, regulate the volume and make your selections right on your sleeve.’”
“‘For now, it’s all-weather, all-season clothing for men, ranging from headgear, footwear, jackets, coats and shirts,’ Betts continued. ‘There will be something recognizable that identifies the product with the Postal Service.’”
Wahconah hopes that a showroom in New York City’s Garment District will help place the line in premier department and specialty stores. Which is all well and good, but how about the USPS spends more time fighting for its place as an integral government agency, working on its pension Catch-22 that legislators forced them into and, you know, go back to doing what it does best: delivering mail to Americans.
