Hoodie Allen had one hell of a 2012. After releasing nothing but free offerings for years in order to build his fanbase, this Long Island upstart dropped his paid debut last spring with the All-American EP and immediately hit number one on iTunes, leading to mainstream radio play and wind in his sails. Almost a year later, Hoodie looks to recapture the magic with his new single, “Cake Boy.”
Ready to knock off your rear-view mirror upon pressing play, this !llmind-produced speaker-blower finds the Hoodie Mob leader more confident than ever and laying a lyrical smackdown to naysayers, using his always mischievous flow to both knock copycats and bag MILFs. However, those familiar with Allen’s previous material might find this thumping track is a bit more mean-mugging than normal, which may or may not deter those who like their pop-rap, well, poppy.
Either way, we’ll really see where Hoodie’s head is at when his upcoming Crew Cuts mixtape drops on February 20.
