Terrace Martin Explains The Creation Of Kendrick Lamar’s “Real”

By Gotty™ / 01.27.13

We’re being treated to a wonder as only the ‘net could offer to us. One by one, we’ve been allowed to peer into the window and see how good kid, m.A.A.d city came to be. Following the same pattern set with “Money Trees” and “Sherane,” west coast wizard Terrace Martin explains how he, Kendrick and Mixed By Ali crafted “Real” from scratch, originating from an unscheduled studio session in New York to the finishing touches applied back home in LA.

What’s revealing is how much of the song’s orchestration originated from the mind of Kendrick, who played the role of symphony leader sketching out the arrangement. As Martin phrases it, the end product is “a gumbo of good music, soul music mixed with Hip-Hop and that samba beat.” Fender Rhodes, Kendrick’s singing, Pro Tools, guitar and Dr. Dre’s finishing touches to the bass are all in there.
