Rick Ross – “Box Chevy”

By J. Tinsley / 01.26.13

The turning point in Rick Ross’ career was the release of “Mafia Music” exactly four years ago this past Thursday. As triumphant, luxurious and controversial as the record proved, Rozay navigated 2009 defiantly, evaded his own past, weathered Hurricane Curtis and walked away further entrenching himself in a teflon mind state in the process. And you know what’s so crazy? Somehow, someway, The Fat Man has become a bigger star every year since.

Now the head of his own empire, an entrepreneur and the owner of a rather decent jumpshot, Ross stands on the cusp of Mastermind, his – check this – sixth solo album. Whether or not the D-Rich-produced “Box Chevy” makes the final cut remains to be seen. What will be interesting, however, is if Ricky alters his formula. “Chevy” is bouncy, rugged and choir-friendly in the sense it probably would be fun to recite under the influence of a certain plant, numerous shots and/or mixed drinks. But so was “Hold Me Back.” And so was “911.” And so was “MC Hammer.” And so was the architect of his ghetto responsorial psalm-style, “BMF.”

For now, enjoy the record what it is. Or what it isn’t. Respect for Rick and Rich for the Mr. Clark/Lean On Me sample, though.
