Jay Rock’s Folow Me Home may not be as “out there” as recent TDE releases. Yet sometimes that straightforward, hard hitting rap is all you need to get your fix. For all of rap music’s grandstanding production to banal, synthed-out tunes, Follow Me Home offers something familiar without sounding uninspired. Said spirit is especially heard on “No Joke” as Jay’s descriptive bars paint a picture of a foul life in Watts.
Jay Rock’s verse on “Money Trees” got him on a lot of listener’s radars but those familiar with Jay Rock know he’s been running the rap marathon for some time. It’s easy to say his street persona’s not fit for this era but TDE’s, namely Black Hippy’s, track record proves merely fitting in isn’t their M.O. We’re happier listeners for their direction as Jay provides a hard-edged counterbalance to their cause.
