To be honest, Rickie Jacobs’ “86 Draft” was initially given a listen off the strength of the title. That and my feelings on arguably the most cursed draft class in NBA history – scratch that, it is – all but forced me to click play and see what it is was Baltimore’s own had to get off his chest.
Needless to say, the soulful production immediately stands out giving the track life long before Jacobs himself gets going. The lyrics represent the story of a MC who has seen his fair share of ups and down thus far in his career. More importantly, the lyrics pay homage to a fallen titan in Maryland folklore – the man seen in the picture, Len Bias – helping drive home a lesson most of us are reminded of on a daily basis.
Len’s story represents the realization many a rappers – hell, people period – pray never authors their own. Potential means nothing if it’s never realized.
