Nike Terminates Lance Armstrong’s Contract, Livestrong Foundation Will Continue

By TSSCrew / 10.17.12

The fallout continues for Lance Armstrong, who the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency characterized as an athlete’s whose pursuit his goals “ran far outside the rules.” In a statement released today, Nike announced the news that the company would be severing ties with the cyclist. Armstrong also stepped down as the chairman of the Livestrong charity he founded in an effort to “to spare the foundation any negative effects” of the controversy surrounding him.

“Due to the seemingly insurmountable evidence that Lance Armstrong participated in doping and misled Nike for more than a decade, it is with great sadness that we have terminated our contract with him. Nike does not condone the use of illegal performance enhancing drugs in any manner.

“Nike plans to continue support of the Livestrong initiatives created to unite, inspire and empower people affected by cancer.”

The termination comes after last week’s release of more than 1,000 pages of evidence against Armstrong by the USADA and 11 of his former teammates testified against him.
