Mannie Fresh Revisits The Hot Boys’ “Get It How U Live” 15 Years Later

By J. Tinsley / 10.31.12

Mannie Fresh sat down The Boombox for a special feature allowing the legendary producer to break down down The Hot Boys’ debut album, Get It How U Live, which dropped a decade and a half ago. Those who grew up fans of the then-start up New Orleans small business venture should appreciate the trip to yesteryear as well as the few stories to coming along for flashback to October 1997.

Fresh runs through all the album’s cuts including “We On Fire,” “I’m Comin’” with Bun B, “I’m A Hot Boy” and “50 Shots Sets It Off.” The most revealing moment, however, comes when Mannie opens up about the song “Blood Thicker” featuring Baby and Magnolia Slim; a song he says, had they practiced what they preached, could have spelled a different destiny for Cash Money.

“I mean… I wish all of us would’ve lived by that. That’s all I can tell you, you know what I’m saying,” confessed Mannie. “Real talk, when you grow up with somebody and y’all have nothing, the only thing you have is each other. Blood is thicker than all of that, until you know, money came.

“But at the beginning of doing the Hot Boys and the original Cash Money Records, we really had nothing but each other. So truly, the songs we were making were from the heart. It was really going, ‘Dude, I don’t think money is ever gon’ change us.’ But you know, some things happen, some people change.”
