Nike’s been celebrating the 30 year anniversary of the Air Force 1 all year and we wanted to take a minute to recognize one of the men who plays a significant role in the model’s relevance. According to Wiki, September 25 is the birthday of Bobbito Garcia aka the man of many nicknames, many hats and probably many sneakers. Even though Bruce Kilgore designed the AF1 way back in ’83, Kool Bob Love was one of the guys whose passion for the model helped keep it alive through the lean years.
While cleaning out the garage this weekend, I found an October ’97 issue of Rap Pages (R.I.P.) which contained Bobbito’s resurrected “Confessions Of A Sneaker Addict” column. As you can read for yourself (click to enlarge), the entry is about his affinity for the Air Force 1 and the writing style reads like a precursor to blogging in its simplicity. Guess we can add that to the list of things he paved the way for.
Rock’em, don’t stock’em. Respect the architect. Happy birthday to Bobbito.
