Sometimes our haggard Hip-hop perspectives lead us to tell rappers born after 1990 to get off our lawn. Said prejudgment hasn’t been the case with Joey BadA$$ and Pro Era, though. I mean we’ve seen the throwback vibe done before ad nauseum. However the fact that these kids have raw talent on top of an appreciation for rap from a bygone time makes their rhymes easier on chiseled rap ears.
Take this cypher with Pitchfork.tv’s Selector series for example. They weave pre-writtens with actual freestyles yet nothing feels forced and their vibin’ all the same. So what you have here is a nice way to spend your next nine minutes and change rather than do work or open another tab for your prurient interests.
Also, with Joey BadA$$ and Pro Era signing with Cinematic Music Group/RED/Sony, it looks like the gang is one giant step closer to the dreams Joey laid out on “Waves.”
