One Chris tore our hearts out last week all but stating hell would freeze over before “Smokey” would join Craig for one more run in the Friday series. Yet, another Chris – the one everyone apparently hates – says the cult classic CB4 may be returning to the silver screen for a revamped sequel.
On a press run for his forthcoming movie 2 Days In New York, Chris Rock revealed to Sway he and Nelson George were kicking around ideas for a possible second installment. The premise of the still-mythcial movie would center around the group members being older. “When we made it, we never dreamed that rappers would be old. I know a bunch of senior rappers, so I think I might want to do something from that perspective – to be like a grown man rapper. Why do a new group when you have a group with all this history?” says the legendary comedian*.
Movies have never been my strongest suit, so my actual critiques about them should always be taken with a grain of salt. However, pending Rock, George and the powers that be actually stick with that premise – same group members played by the same actors – it’s hard to see why it wouldn’t work. CB4 II would fail to break box office numbers or probably even come close to sniffing an Oscar. Nonetheless, those who have come to love the movie over the past three decades would probably enjoy seeing MC Gusto, Stab Master Arson and Dead Mike all grown up 20 years later.
Plus, it’s not like there’s any shortage of examples in Hip-Hop to provide satirical material and inspiration.
Bonus: Since we’re on the topic of CB4, now is as good a time as ever to post one of the greatest rap songs in Western civilization history.
