Lots of acts have played on cruise ships recently: Weezer, Kid Rock, John Mayer. Although, a lot of those acts have sucked for much of the recent past, so cruise ship touring seemed like an almost literal voyage down the River Styx.
However, that high-seas death sail ethos seems to be changing, as California super-fest, Coachella, will start flaunting its brand around the Caribbean. The S.S. Coachella sets sail this December from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, with El-P, Killer Mike, Hot Chip, Yeasayer, James Murphy, Girl Talk and Sleigh Bells joining for the venture’s first two maiden voyages on December 16 and 19.
There are plenty of interesting features (as the New York Times notes), but the most salient are the ship’s inclusion of a half-acre of grass in which to enjoy the acts and a wine tasting with Murphy. For the privilege of discussing four-year-old merlot with the former LCD Soundsystem frontman, customers can expect to drop at least $500 for room and board–with some rooms going for as much as $9,000 per person.
It also doesn’t appear that the always utilitarian policy of “all-inclusive” will be offered, so attendees can expect hefty bar tabs to be tacked onto the end of their bills as well. But if you ingest enough designer drugs, flushing money down the drain on watered-down mimosas seems moot. Because you get to see Sleigh Bells slay scrotum live! On a boat!
