Yeah, You’re Crazy If You Don’t Watch NBA TV’s “Dream Team” Documentary

By J. Tinsley / 06.05.12

Last night during halftime of Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals, an extended trailer of the forthcoming Dream Team documentary was shown. The end result? Anyone with the slightest sort of love for basketball officially cleared their schedule for next Wednesday night. To say the program which airs June 13 on NBA TV is “highly anticipated” is like saying the November presidential election is “important.” Words fail to encompass how truly groundbreaking the show has the potential to be, so it’s better to let those who actually lived the Barcelona summer of 1992 tell it for themselves.

Truthfully, and I speak for myself when saying this, I’d be fine with two hours of nothing but practice footage. Seeing MJ, Magic, Chuck, Pippen, Bird and the rest of the squad basically try to rip each other’s heads off in practice while insulting one another the entire time? Man, please. I’m getting chills just thinking about it. And seeing the film of how Grant Hill, Chris Webber and the rest of the college kids walk the Dream Team in their first scrimmage? Yeah, something I need to see with my own to eyes.*

Look, I know I’ve said in the past I’d love to see this ’92 squad vs. the ’08 Redeem Team (or even this year’s team had Rose and Howard never gotten hurt). That being said, the impact The Dream Team had on the NBA and basketball as an international sport is something I’ll never question. People often forget how much pressure this team was under following the embarrassment that was the 1988 Olympics and John Thompson’s questionable roster moves.** For anyone out there with my number, don’t call or text me next Wednesday at 9 p.m. EST. I’m not even going to tweet. You know exactly where I’ll be.

* – There’s also this longstanding rumor that a young Allan Houston began talking sh*t to Mike. Jordan proceeded to not let him touch the ball for over an hour. Forget scoring. Forget rebounding. I’m talking he didn’t TOUCH the ball. This needs to be confirmed or denied.

** – Yes, questionable moves like choosing Georgetown guard Charles Smith and Bimbo Coles over some kid named Tim Hardaway and another point guard in Rod Strickland. Steve Kerr, too. Do you realize how deadly a Mitch Richmond and Kerr kick out game could’ve been? I digress.
