There’s three rules in life. Porn isn’t going anywhere. Never tug on Superman’s cap. And the feds – by choice or by force – will always find a way to get their money. Lauryn Hill will learn the last lesson the hard way as she is scheduled to appear in court June 29 for failing to file taxes from 2005 through 2007. The worst case scenario finds L-Boogie looking at three years in the belly of the beast and a fine of $300,000.
While we all wish Lauryn nothing but the best, the situation does cause the mind to wander for musical purposes. Given everything happening in her life, from Rohan Marley running off with another woman, possible jail time and financial hurdles, does this or does this not have all the makings of one hell of a comeback album? Lauryn’s going to need some dead presidents to get the feds off her back and what better way than dropping the one album equally as mythical throughout the past decade as Dre’s Detox? Just some food for thought.
Update: On Friday, Lauryn responded to the tax evasion charges by releasing the longest statement ever via Tumblr. In a nutshell, Hill reasoned that she withdrew from society to guarantee the safety and well-being of herself and her family. According to Hill, she “did not deliberately abandon my fans, nor did I deliberately abandon any responsibilities, but I did however put my safety, health and freedom and the freedom, safety and health of my family first over all other material concerns! I also embraced my right to resist a system intentionally opposing my right to whole and integral survival.”
