One of the only few who was ever able to keep pace with Black Thought on a track? Malik B.
The Roots’ “Respond/React”
"The iPod Shuffle – The Roots’ “Respond/React”"
cosign this song even though
“what they do what they do shit was corny as fuck….you gets no play in that texas yo shit don’t bump in the trunk!”
Man…I hate that everybody missed this shot. Pimp C’s diss!
“…on some dundee shit, representin’ the outback…”
the Bad Lieutenant & M-illitant were on some super MC ish on this LP.
I remember seeing this ad in Rappages; what a list of heavy hitters co-signing The Roots.
That whole album was amazing
Black Thought stays underated… Maybe it’s because he seldom puts any of his personal life in his songs so you dont feel that emotional visceral connection to him. Maybe it’s due to the lack of radio hits, even after—what? 13 albums later?… But for whatever reason, BT stays slept on. But most every MC coming outta Philly owes Tariq a Fathers Day card come June cuz He birthed these all cats on some test-tube baby -ish.
I still bump J.Period & Black Thought’s mixtape from 2010. It’s the closest we’ll get to a BT album.
But Malik B…. I got “water”—the joint BT did once Malik got done in by the heroin or coke he was on. Malik was prolly Philly’s Elzhi before Slum’s Elzhi got good. Malik was no joke. I think he’s clean now, but… oh what coulda been.
let me just say cosign to all of that.
I still bump J.Period & Black Thought’s mixtape from 2010.
i listened to it kind of heavy in Dec (or maybe Jan.) Shit still goes.
Great track. Malik never got the props he deserved for the way he killed this album. Thought’s had a great career and this album is easily in my all-time top 10, but I don’t agree that he’s underrated. I think you nailed a couple of the reasons why he’s not more popular (the lack of emotion and connection is a huge limitation in an mc and a completely understandable reason why an mc like Thought doesn’t get more props). Just my two cents.
there’s a real shortlist of folk who can really hang with Thought, Malik B was one… Bahamadia is truly unheralded as an MC and she went in with Thought on more than a few jawns… and of course the classic with Big Pun. I’d put “Super Lyrical” right up there with Big and Meth’s “The What” for some straight Batman & Robin beat-rippin’ ish.
J.Period & Black Thought @ Manifesto in Toronto doing some Kane and whatnot… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bb261pfp5lg
I think Undun is the best album of the year so far. Philly!
It’s a shame that Malik got caught up in them nasty ass drugs.
Black Thought’s top ten dead or alive.
Man, I slept hard on this Black Thought/J.Period mixtape! It’s crazy how Thought says they couldn’t do this back in the states; fickle hip hop fans.
The Best of The Roots mix J.Period did is a banger too.
This was definitely a classic track. I thought Malik and Black were close on No Alibi but then i thought about it…not even close.
Black automatically enters discussion as top 5 rappers of all time to me.
I will argue the point with anyone. He’s perfect. He’s technically perfect, but
he still has the charisma and passion required to make you feel what he’s saying.
Malik was like, right there with him all along too.
