“It’s the Lupe Fiasco I want to be, without the industry constraints.”
Fresh from the stage at the Beale Street Music Festival in Memphis, the often over-analyzed Lupe Fiasco sat down with Fuse TV for a few minutes to discuss his upcoming and highly-anticipated album, Food & Liquor 2. Three or four years ago, that would’ve had his staunch supporters amped. Now, not so much. After dropping two near classics to kick off his career and then following them with the commercially-lauded Lasers last year, most of his fan base is still a bit salty their hip-hop savior went pop and turned out the “black hole” of his catalouge.
But, now Lu is telling us the double-disc follow-up to 2006′s Food & Liquor is the album people have been waiting for. No strings being pulled by the label. No nostalgic rehashing, simply to appease fans. Just Lupe doing Lupe. But, at this point, most fans should probably take that with a grain of salt, considering the Chi-Town rapper has obviously experienced lifestyle changes over the years, which have inevitably affected his output. Whatever the outcome is though, it’s safe to say this LP is going to be the final straw for fans and a tipping point in the career of one of hip-hop’s most enigmatic rappers.
The single drops on May 22. So, only time will tell how his legacy holds up.
