Obits: Chuck Brown, “Godfather Of Go-Go,” Dead At 75

By J. Tinsley / 05.16.12

Upon hearing D.C. legend Chuck Brown was battling pneumonia two weeks ago, the thought of the “Godfather of Go-Go” not making it was always in the back of my mind. Today, probably the biggest icon D.C. has ever known – music-wise, at least – passed away at the age of 75. Whitt could probably explain this slightly more in depth seeing as how he is a native of Chocolate City, but having grown up in the city in some sorts, words truly cannot begin to describe the titan he was in the DMV. Go-Go was the regional flavor with Brown being the undisputed top chef. I’ve even seen some friends from the area tweet he was “bigger than Michael Jackson in the city,” and to an extent, they’re not lying.

Songs in the vein of “Bustin’ Loose,” “We Need Some Money” and “Run Joe” will forever survive in the city’s DNA because Chuck never abandoned D.C. In 2006, and I’m glad the Washington Post printed this powerful quote, “I’m not retired because I’m not tired. I’m still getting hired and I’m still inspired. As long as I can walk up on that stage, I want to make people happy. I want to make people dance.” Brown’s words explain why he always appreciated what his talent brought him and why he’d continue to inspire a region that inspired him.

Chances are, he’ll be making people dance until the end of time. R.I.P. Chuck. No better yet, wind me up, Chuck.
