DG Yola Set To Return To Rap With “Live From The Halfway House”

By J. Tinsley / 05.14.12

During the summer of 2006, the period of time between my sophomore and junior year in college, the marquee southern artists were T.I., Young Jeezy and Lil Wayne. All three littered the radio with monster hits, yet DG Yola presented all the makings of a budding underground star. “Ain’t Gon’ Let Up” was one of those records which did something special to parties/clubs. The energy was Metta World Peace-insane and from the moment Yola began screaming, “See I don’t know what y’all been told/But I got to get me a big bank roll/Yes, a fat bag of that sticky and some bad ass hoes/When I step out on the scene, suckas already know…” everyone would join in choir practice at the top of their smoke filled lungs and liquor filled kidneys.

Since then, however, Yola’s seen the dark side of the industry and life in general from jail time to even surviving a murder attempt. As it turns out, buddy is currently in a halfway house in Atlanta and preparing the release of a new mixtape appropriately entitled, wait for it, Live From The Halfway House. To get the ball rolling, DG let loose of some unreleased recordings. The first was a never before heard David Banner verse on the previously mentioned “Ain’t Gon’ Let Up” while the second, “Forgiveness,” tackled the subject of manning up to mistakes of the past.

Do what these songs as you please. I’m not sure who’s excited for DG Yola’s return to rap, but this guy right here is.
