5. Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth “Go With The Flow” and Nas “Get Down” (Prod. By Nas & Salaam Remi)
Both Sampled: James Brown – “Funky Drummer”
"For Pete’s Sake: 7 More Songs That Used The Same Samples As Pete Rock"
presuming this list must not be exhaustive because you’d have to be very new to hip-hop/r&b to think only two acts sampled “searching”. roy ayers probably made more off that song than a lot of producers earn in years.
and funky drummer, fam? funky drummer? HUNDREDS of records have sampled funky drummer….smh…
You mean more people sampled “Funky Drummer”?
one of the worst feelings is hearing someone flip the same sample as you, (if its James Brown though you know your the 500th to flip it). But hey nobody owns loops except the original writer, but when you chop it up in a clever unique way and then you hear almost the same flip on the radio afterwards. Makes you fuckin nuts. That’s why this next EP I do is sample free, though I love samples
I feel petey on da bitin aspect because of da sentimentality of da beat. However lu went N! Its good 2hear him ovr boom-bap again. Excited 4 f&l2 now
i dont know if anyone else saw this but according to rap radar pete rock had this to say about it:
No disrespect to lupe fiasco and i like him alot but TROY should be left alone. Feel so violated, the beat is next to my heart and was made. Outta anguish and pain. When it’s like that it should not be touched by no one! It’s so hard for folks to make original music, I possess that, but these dudes are scared of that and this is supposed to be HIP HOP? Man I’m a lupe fan and everything but TROY was my homie man. I think about him and Hev every fucking day!!!! Smh
thats just the first paragraph
Some of the issue is Lupe is just not the most liked cat in the world. All rappers have absurd egos, to be sure, but Lupe’s crime might be that he thinks he’s smarter than every other rapper. There’s an aloofness to the cat and to many of his fans. It’s not necessarily a fair shot, but I think it fuels some of the dislike of the guy and some of Pete’s ire.
I agree. I’m a Lupe fan but he sometimes doesn’t get it. The whole thing with 2Dopeboyz and getting mad that a blog posted your music. The way he blasts President Obama on wax and on tv but didn’t really say anything about President Bush’s 8 years in office. I mean you can feel anyway you want but be consistent like least Immortal Technique.
love TROY, as we all do i imagine. but no matter how much pete rock mopes and complains and (i’ll say it) BITCHES, he doesnt own the rights to the original. it’s his song to be possessive about.
bottom line. no idea is original. these nikkas just remade lisa lisa and cult jam as a hardcore club song for chrissake. ANY track is fair game. at least it’s lupe trying to pay homage. rather than Chub Cheesie and the Stankmouth Boyz using that timeless horn loop to promote a new dance craze.
let it go pete.
*it’s not his song to be possessive about.
It’s his chop to be possessive about though. He made that sample what it is.
Random of nothing, this from Pete Rock on Twitter:
RT @PeteRock: And let me be clear cuz a lot of y’all don’t know this. But Tom Scott himself gave me an approval for TROY, told me I did a great job!!
Tom Scott is the cat responsible for the horns that Pete flipped for TROY. That’s high praise for the Chocolate boy Wonder. This also explains some of his ire—he got permission/cosign for his sample.
I doubt Pete got cosigns for every other flip before or after, tho he’s gotten more than a few from musicians. But this further adds to the fact that Pete feels that not only is this a seminal record but that as a pioneer who “did it the right way” he just feels owed some sorta pinkie-ring kiss.
Just an interesting addition, I thought I’d share…
Just sampling from the same song doesn’t mean you used the same snip from that song. The Organized Konfusion one isn’t even close to the same sample, it’s just samples the same track.
My highly trained ears inform me that Ed O.G. may have used this first for “Be a Father To Your Child”,precluding even Pete’s usage…
