Your Daily Funk: Merry Clayton – “Southern Man”

By Trackstar The DJ / 04.12.12

As I conduct interviews with artists and producers who were affiliated with or influenced by Organized Noize as part of the promo campaign for my “Best of” mixtape, one song that has come up over and over is Cool Breeze’s “Watch For The Hook.” In particular, ONP’s use of Merry Clayton’s “Southern Man” seems to have left its mark on the minds of many familiar with their catalog.

“Southern Man” was originally a Neil Young tune, but Merry covered it on her 1971 LP Ode, and predictably made it funkier and harder. While a compelling song on its own merit, hearing the way ONP pulled just the right part of the record to make one of the most respected southern rap records ever makes for an even better listening experience. It should come as no surprise to those in the know that they recognize “Watch for the Hook” as one of the most amazing examples of Rico, Ray and Sleepy’s underrated genius.
