Jai Paul – “Jasmine”

By Samir S. / 04.15.12

Most Hip-Hop fans are probably at least somewhat familiar with U.K. artist/producer Jai Paul on account of Drake’s “Dreams Money Can Buy,” which sampled Paul’s broken-down falsetto from his single “BTSTU.” Since that acclaimed track, there hasn’t been much else heard from Paul, that’s until recently, when a new song, “Jasmine,” finally surfaced. It’s hard to say it wasn’t worth the wait.

“Jasmine” is an elegantly layered concoction: warped, fuzzy guitars, handclaps, and a rising bassline (that will get your heart racing on the right speakers) are just a few of the elements that make up the track. Characteristically, Paul’s vocals serve more as a melodic piece of instrumentation than a vehicle for lyrics (which are half comprehensible if you listen closely). Most importantly, Jai Paul has the sense of space and build to give all these layers their proper due. The outcome is a dance track trapped behind a wall of technical trickery and muted sentiment. If that doesn’t exactly sound beautiful, it should.
