Videos such as these will never, ever get old. And if there was a way to compile them all on one DVD, I’d pay good money. Footage surfaced yesterday of Timbaland recalling what the atmosphere in the studio was like when Aaliyah’s smash hit “Are You That Somebody?” was created. Needless to say, the story was doper than you could ever imagine.
Timbo, the late Static Major and Smoke are in some Los Angeles studio in the wee hours of the morning with the unique task of belting out the lead single from the Doctor Doolittle soundtrack. An interesting and lucrative contractual obligation, indeed, in the sense that regardless of what Tim and Static created that night, it was going to be the first selection from the soundtrack any of us would hear in 1998. It just so happens Timbaland begins playing around with drums with one pattern catching the attention of a half-asleep Static. From there, history and God-given talents take their course.
Aaliyah falls in love with the baby ad-libs and within three hours “Are You That Somebody?” was born, recorded and mastered. Adding to the allure of the fable, by 10 A.M. that same morning, the record was being blasted on radio stations around the country. The song itself would mature into a catalog-defining record for all parties involved and one which grew even more impressive upon hearing Timbaland navigate through its construction as if he were Dr. Seuss’ musical cousin. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the narrative of how one of the 1990′s most recognizable records came to be. Amazing, right?
