The ubiquitous 2 Chainz keeps up his high-volume output with “Like Me,” a new track that borrows vocals from The Weeknd and features production from Kanye West’s DJ Mano. The record brings together the voices of two of the most buzzed-about and musically productive artists of their respective genres for a song that sounds better on record than it does on paper.
“Like Me” samples the chorus from Thursday standout “The Birds Part 1,” with DJ Mano substituting the military drums from that track for a heavy synth line and customary hi-hats. 2 Chainz keeps things limited to one verse as he stays on his braggadocios shit, boasting that he can “kill ni**as with one liners” (the closest he comes here is “Countin’ so much money, I got arthritis”). But 2 Chainz isn’t about lyrical wizardry. His strength lies in his ability to transform seemingly throwaway lines into instant catchphrases through sheer force of voice and presence. The hope is that he hasn’t worn himself thin before his solo album, schedule for release this summer through Def Jam.
