For many artists, releasing a video for a song that has been out well over a year might seem like bad timing, or worse, a last-grasp attempt at salvaging a project. Not so for Aloe Blacc, whose smooth soul music has a timeless quality to it — making his Good Things LP as enjoyable a listen today as it was when it released in the fall of 2010. That kind of staying power is a result of Aloe’s ability to pen songs that are imbued with feeling while falling on the right side of sentimentalism.
Like the song, the video for “You Make Me Smile” is endearingly sweet, a portrait of how unconditional love can make an otherwise bleak situation seem a little bit brighter. It’s always easier to take in this kind of artistic positivity when its handled with this much care.
