It’s amazing what a simple YouTube search can do for the creative process. With the entire world watching an expected emotional Grammys tonight on the heels of Whitney Houston’s passing, let’s take a trip in time to that same award show in 1983. The clip is worth the price of historical admission for a variety of reasons. Like, so:
– Rick James being Rick James while presenting the Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. As David D. noted, once Rick broadcasted, “This is a good place to go under when it gets wet,” we were in for something truly memorable. And if you didn’t think the man who made “Mary Jane” a permanent staple in pop culture could get even more ignorant, saying “I’m trying to get some” to Grace Jones on national television was even better. Does anyone doubt that Rick eventually got with Grace though? This is Rick James in 1983 we’re talking about.
– The talent in that category is something we may never, ever see again. Stevie Wonder’s “Do I Do,” Luther Vandross’ “Forever, For Always, For Love,” Ray Parker Jr.’s “The Other Woman,” Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” and George Benson’s “Turn Your Love Around” are ALL classics. How the hell does something like that happen?
– Seeing Marvin Gaye so ecstatic to take home the award is both beautiful and eerie. Beautiful in the sense that a man who gave the world so many timeless odes prior to “Sexual Healing” finally reached the mountaintop of musical achievements. Also, he finally appeared to have come full circle from the demons which had him basically flee the country only a few years earlier. Eerie in the sense he’d be dead not even two years later.
Indeed this is a classic moment packing more of a punch 29 years later largely due to many of its key contributors are no longer living. Enjoy the Grammys tonight if that’s what you’ll be indulging in (I’ll be flipping back and forth between this and Heat/Hawks and Jazz/Grizzlies). Chances are we’ll be YouTube’ing tonight’s show 10 years from now paying homage to everyone that isn’t here. People don’t live forever, but timeless music does.

RICK JAMES WAS THE REALEST.
Grace Jones was the precursor to Gaga
Rick’s raw haha
Rick Probably told Grace Backstage “Come Here and give me dat Jungle Pussy!!!”
Grace probably punched him in the Face for not saying Please.
Rick probably got Grace at a Grammys after party later that night. Rolled up a mean J, probably did a line. All that.
Haha. You’re probably 100% accurate.
Those noms are stacked.
“Turn Your Love Around” >>> no I mean “Do I Do” >>> aw hell…whatever. Go Marvin!
How do you decide who winning in this catergory. You couldn’t go wrong with any choice
It’s hard to believe it took Marvin over 20 years to get ONE Grammy while Adele’s got multiple Grammys and she’s only 4 years deep into her career. I hate to be that guy but man that ain’t fair haha.
The boots x colonel pants collabo though? Too cold.
May I say that, T.S.S. is the best blog on the mufuckin planet. Fuck opinion!! ha!
And may I also say that Rick James was exemplifying some of the highest forms of O.G. pimpin’, right there!
Crazy clip
^^^^CO-Sign
Incredible clip…. Marvin just come across like the most innocent sweet dude (the way he speaks even seem kinda weird, like um, extra civil (or camp as fuck IDK?) and Rick is raw as hell lol
That’s my boy Rick right there good to c and old clip with 3 trend setter on 1 stage
I wish I had more hands for Grace Jones.
I might watch the Grammy’s if we still had people like this on there.
Rick James gave zero fucks lol. But we all know Grace let him hit…
Also…that nomination field is just amazing. R&B will never get back to that point
best nomination field i’ve ever seen. straight classics, i’m in total agreement with everyone above. and, yeah, marvin should’ve won way more grammies than he did.
who caught rick saying “and the only one i liked” before he read marvin’s name. rick didn’t like any of those other joints? he’s wilding! LMAO!
at spirit i think rick was refering to the only healing he likes is sexual healing. I dont think he meant he only like marvins song…..and to the other nomines i cant believe there were so much heat on that category! Crazy how times have changed….
