Loosies: Moruf’s “Rest Well,” Slaughterhouse Says “She Will,” Estelle, Busta Rhymes & More

By Greg Whitt / 02.23.12

It’s really hard to find tributes to fathers in Hip-Hop. Lyrical diatribes against deadbeat dads and odes to hardworking single mothers are plentiful. That’s why it’s so refreshing to hear Jersey emcee Moruf pay homage to his late pops on “Rest Well.” Produced by Like of Pac Div, the short track uses a relationship with a woman as a jumping off point to acknowledge the lasting effect that the guidance and advice from a real father has on a young man.

Joey and Joell both dropped freestyles over MMG boss, Rick Ross’ “Stay Schemin’” earlier this week, but all four quarters of Slaughter are in place for this assault of the Lil Wayne and Drake’s T-Minus-produced hit. While the original song was released seven months ago – old school jam of the week territory in the Internet era – the four-headed monster breathes fire, and new life, into Tha Carter IV’s second single.

Busta and the only man to keep Puffy’s Cîroc sticky fingers off of his publishing join British import Estelle on the official remix to her new single “Thank You.” I have no idea why this somehow works, but this trio of seemingly disparate flavors results in a surprisingly palatable song.

Rappers’ love of light in the ass rock groups is pretty well-documented. Still, Sugar Tongue Slim’s Coldplay sampled “Kids May Dance” takes Chris Martin’s buoyant stadium rock and adds his own inspirational twist that is upbeat without being cloyingly sweet.
