It’s been more than two years since we interviewed J. Cole in Atlanta during our second year at A3C. His star power at the time was merely a glimmer. “Lights Please” was the closest thing he had to a single, but it was buried in a 22-track mixtape that was getting a moderate amount of love from the blogs & very little love from the industry. The hopes for Jay’s apprentice were looking a little Bleek in relation to the expectations that came with being the first artist from RocNation. Regardless, it was obvious he possessed the talent to balance the tightrope between Hip-Hop heads & mainstream fans if he could just find his footing.
After a stint on tour with Rihanna, a Trey Songz-assisted single and a few high profile guest spots, he’s finally at a point where he’s proving fans right. Suddenly, a picture of us talking on my Facebook page is full of girls’ jealous comments, when two years previous the picture had four “likes,” two of which came from TSS staffers. When you watch the Grammys, he’s within spitting distance of Adele and when you go to his Twitter page, you’ll see he’s followed by two million Hip-Hop fans who’ve now heard of the Fayetteville, NC.
I guess it’s safe to say that he “Grew Up Fast.”

this
yeah nigga, we outta here, yeah nigga!!
had to say it lol
YES!!!! I was just talking about this yesterday to my homeboy. I was saying that Cole needed to drop something to get his name back out there but needed to sound a little more grown up with a little more confidence and charisma. This is very dope.
Not bad, not good. A generic rap song. Kind of sums up Cole’s entire output.
cole world real cole world this shit is nice
“The hopes for Jay’s apprentice were looking a little Bleek”
I see what you did there.
This shit is nice you cant deny his metaphors. He came a long way and you have to do what you have to do to make it and feed ur family so Im not stressing as long as he drops real ass mixtapes ill forgive his albums
This is too sick. Feeling the hell out of this. But one small gripe though:
“Ya’ll got way too electro, damn near techno” Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Mr. Nice Watch?
Exactly.
David Ruffin – “The Double Cross”
Awesome. But yeah a Lil mr. Nice watch Hypocracy. That diggy shit was funny
As long as he stays away from those lines about farting, Cole should be fine.
And lasagna lol
This is heat. Cole is def still finding his footing between spitting hot bars & crafting a hot song but this just shows he’s heading in the right direction. My gripe with his album was that on a lot of songs…I just got bored but this song had me anxiously waiting for each metaphor, simile, punchline etc.
Bald like Uncle Fester = best “bald like….” line ever.
that soul sample is tight but damn cole is pretty bland on this one….
