When Peyton Manning underwent his neck surgery and missed this season there probably wasn’t a soul who thought that he might have thrown his final touchdown for the Colts. Yet the chances of that being the case grows exponentially with each passing day. Owner Jim Irsay’s shakedown from the ground up has spared nobody thus far, as GM Bill Polian, former head coach Jim Caldwell and 11 other members of the coaching staff have been let go in the wake of his reign. And after Manning essentially declared that with all the new upholstery, he was feeling like a stranger in his own home, Irsay struck right back.
“I have so much affection and appreciation for Peyton. I mean we’re family. We always will be and we are. He’s a politician. I mean look at, when it comes to being competitive, let’s just say on a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being the highest, we’re both 11s, OK? So there’s been plenty of eggshells scattered around this building by him with his competitive desire to win.”
And though Peyton attempted to squash the beef, Jim Irsay’s actions more than words have clearly been showing what direction he wants to go. Instead of opting to pick up the pieces after their lost 2011 season, the owner has decided he wants start from scratch and cleaned house. The new head coach and GM, Chuck Pagano and Ryan Grigson, respectively, were chosen without consulting the Colts’ quarterback. Pagano, a defensive focused man from Baltimore who, in all likelihood will not have the same nurturing relationship with Manning as Jim Caldwell or Tony Dungy did before him.
March 8th is the day the quarterback due to cash in his $28 million bonus check, so action will definitely need to be taken beforehand. No doubt, Peyton won’t want to be traded and teams won’t want to absorb that $28 million that would come with a trade. Peyton will want to go to a contender – a team that did well in the playoffs this year or one that’s only one piece away from taking the next step. The Texans come to mind, to remain in the AFC South and stick it to his former team twice a year for the rest of his career, and additionally Baltimore and San Francisco also seem like viable destinations for the four time MVP. The last two especially look like viable destinations seeing as they’re just a quarterback away from a Super Bowl ring. Baltimore, though, might have renewed faith in Flacco after his performance against the Patriots. There are also teams like Washington, Miami and Arizona, who all have strong nuclei but are missing a key quarterback. And let’s not forget the Jets who are clearly losing patience with Mark Sanchez. When Peyton is released, he’ll have a choice of 15 or so teams and he’ll surely pick the one that fits him best.
No doubt it will be a shrewd move and business is business, but I think there’s a better way of treating the man who essentially was the entire franchise for the last decade and one of the city’s most recognizable face. If Irsay had balls, he’d tell his loyal quarterback exactly what he’s going to do and to prepare accordingly. All of these shenanigans only make the organization look bad and focus more unwanted attention on the team. Irsay looks like he’s trying to milk Manning as much as he can to sell season tickets, by making it appear that he’ll be a Colt next year. And when the date comes to pay #18, he’ll be mercilessly released, but out of the ashes, a new storyline will develop for the 2012 NFL season: Peyton Manning’s quest for revenge against his former team.

Shits a wrap, doggie.
I asked about 15 people in a bar Tuesday if they Peyton was released, healthy with 3 good years left in the tank & was interested in playing for the 9ers, and you were the 9ers GM, would you drop Alex Smith for Manning. I was more than shocked to hear that most people would keep Smith.
Smith has more than three years in him though. If you take Peyton you just have to replace him soon anyway. If you’re going to replace Smith it may as well be with somebody who will last.
yeah, that’s ridiculous….not doggin Smith, he’s had a helluva comeback this season…definitely just needed a coach to believe in him, but 3 years of a healthy Peyton >>>>>>>>>>> Alex Smith
Smith has more than three years in him though.

But the 49ers pretty much have been successful a lot of times in spite of Smith instead of because of him. Imagine how deadly even if only for 3 yrs this team would be with that defense, running game, special teams (minus you know) w/ Peyton actually breaking down opposing defenses. And speaking of defense, imagine how many points he could score w/ all the time he’d be on the field seeing how many 3-and-outs their defense generates.
Maybe I’m just praying he doesn’t go to the Jets.
Peyton having three years in him is EXTREMELY optimistic. He has a very serious neck injury. Injuring it in a minor way could keep him out of games for weeks at a time, or a whole season like we just saw. A serious injury could result in his death or quadriplegia.

Peyton having three years in him is EXTREMELY optimistic.

I’m speaking hypothetically. I can make no real guess as to how Peyton will be health-wise. Optimistic and pessimistic speculation comes out about it all the time. The game scheme for Indy which I’m pretty sure any team will adopt after picking him up, is keeping Peyton protected is # 1 priority. He doesn’t get injured often, remember he was next to break Brett Favre’s Iron Man record before the surgery.
He DIDN’T get injured often, with the injury he has now he will be very injury prone.
They’re crazy.
I don’t understand why he would want still want to play though. We could be staring at the biggest on the field tragedy of all time, God forbid.
Sports is business, nobody is immune to the axe. Still, it’s fucked up that the relationship between Peyton and the Colts is falling apart. I wish that they would skip the pleasantries and media circus and get to the point; it’s either he’s apart of the future or not.
PEYTON MANNING SHOULD ABSOLUTELY NOT PLAY NEXT SEASON!
Seriously, he is already going to go down as one of the greatest QBs of all time, and he’s already rich. What does he stand to gain? Another ring, if he gets lucky? He’s only got at most three more seasons in him, so he’d have to sign with a good team and then go all the way.
BUT, if he gets hit wrong one time, he could die or be paralyzed for the rest of his life. It’s just crazy for him to play anymore.
I also don’t understand why they felt the need to oust everybody after last season. They did poorly because 1) They didn’t have Peyton Manning on a team built around Peyton Manning and 2) Because they were purposely trying not to win too many games. I don’t see how that is anybody’s fault.
Additionally I think they should have just had Peyton take over as head coach. He’s extremely loyal to the team, a great leader, and he was practically coaching from the sidelines all last season. I just don’t understand any of this at all.
Cause he F**king Peyton Manning and wants to win. He is one of the most competitive athletes playing, period. I hope he goes to the Ravens….
I imagine he also wants to live. He can win as a coach, he can die as a player. Seems like an easy choice to me.
I think if he were that prone to dying then they really wouldn’t allow him to play instead of just hoping he’s healthy enough to lead the team to a successful season. I saw a video of a doctor saying that if his neck is allowed to heal completely, he should be fine, the only question is if he has enough time for it to do so.
When have you ever known the NFL to place the players’ health as a priority? The injury he has will never heal completely, this is what I’ve heard from two different people one who has followed the NFL very very closely his whole life and the other a physical therapist.
When have you ever known the NFL to place the players’ health as a priority?

You serious? Have you notice a little change in QB protection, kickoff return and helmet to helmet contact at all b?
Yeah, they made some concessions this season. Their long-term health policies blow though and they’re not going to get involved in an individual player’s health.
And now apparently this whole thing is now Rob Lowe’s fault lmao

I don’t think he should play, cause those neck injuries ain’t no joke. I don’t wanna see Peyton get laid out one day and end up being carried off on a stretcher. If that neck/spine is unstable, don’t even risk it.
But if he does play, SF, NYJ, or MIA are gonna be the first three reams in line.
And prolly Oakland too.
lol I hope not Oakland
Oakland wouldn’t make a move for him because they wouldn’t want to look like they made a mistake with the Palmer trade. SF, NYJ, & Houston seem the most likely to me if he does continue to play with another team.
oakland already knows they made a mistake with palmer, hence the hue jackson axe
Oakland (My Favorite Team) + Peyton Manning (My All-Time Favorite Quarterback Ever) = A Dream Come True
I think the undoing of this wasn’t Peyton getting hurt but the belief that him and his agent negotiated their contract extension in bad faith knowing Peyton was more than likely going to miss most if not all of the 2012 season and not disclosing that info to the Colts.
Polian got canned for taking Peyton’s word on his health status when he shoulda gotten 2nd 3rd and 4th opinions from docs with no vested interest in Manning.
Also, Irsay saw what happened when you build so much around 1 guy and that guy goes away. We’ve seen his in Cleveland with LBJ–building solely around one guy can totally sink a team if that guy leaves or gets hurt or suddenly can’t perform at previous level.
Irsay has no desire to pay Manning a $28million bonus due, plus the 10mill he’ll earn this year knowing all he’s got in the coffers in Curtis Painter for 2014 and beyond.
Peyton’s as good as cut.
Peyton Manning will probably never play another game in the NFL as much as he may want to. Peyton for the most part of his career is used to stability (GM, O-Coordinator) and now that Jim Irsay is cleaning house that’s telling you he won’t be there. He’s much too competitive to go to an underachieving team to start all over. I personally think he was more injured than reported and didn’t have a shot of ever playing again.
I don’t think you’re completely right. I think he is healthy enough to play. His injury would make playing very risky though, so whether or not he will will end up playing somewhere will be up to him. Someone would definitely take him.
Damnit why did we sign fitzpatrick during the season
Niners won’t make a move for Peyton. Harbaugh and company are firm believers in Alex and when Alex’s time is up in however many years, Jim feels confident Kap will step in and keep it going. I’m not saying Alex>Peyton (I’m no fool) but you dont bring in Peyton for potentially one hypothetical year (all the doctors I’ve spoken too say they wouldn’t bet that Peyton will even be able to play after the injury) and risk killing Alex’s confidence like that, especially after the strong season he’s had…
I believe in our coaching staff, give em a full offseason and they’ll turn an even bigger man out of Alex Smith.
Yeah, the Niners making a play for Manning would be unwise. Like I said earlier, if it ain’t broke. If you are wise, you draft with the future in mind. Bringing Peyton anywhere means giving up everything with the hopes of winning it all next season (i.e. Favre). You are going to trade away a lot of picks (i.e. Palmer/Raiders – only difference is, the Raiders have a lot of weapons and young talent, so that first rounder this year and conditional pick in 2013 are minimal). Niners have 27 free agents coming to the market. They cannot afford to trade away picks in this years draft with that hefty number – and the fact that they now have pick number 30 in the first round as well?
Look, I love watching Peyton play. But if I were he, I would retire. It looks as if the Colts no longer want him with the new direction. It reminds me of Joe Cool. Sure he went on to play (very) well for the Chiefs for a couple of seasons (and he was 36-37 at the time)… but did they win a ring?
Retire with your money, your health, and your legacy… and call it a great (great) career. You also hurt Jim Irsay in the process by retiring. I know that he is banking on Peyton still wishing to play AND the draft picks that come with that to stack an aging team with a franchise rookie QB in Luck (trust, this is exactly what he is thinking). It worked for the Cowboys – Herschel Walker, Jimmy Johnson “The Trade” but if Peyton retires? There goes that plan.
I love Peyton and although the retiring move would definitely be wise and on point…ugh, I just don’t want him to. I want the guy to win another ring, to at least play Brady again in the postseason and give it to him, I don’t care if its with the Jets, Colts, Dolphins, whoever! The guy is a competitor, he’s gotta give it a shot at least once more…
Peyton to the Jets so New England can actually have some real competition. They cakewalk to the playoffs every year. And almost none of their regular season games are interesting unless you’re a Pat’s fan or live in New England. Let’s see a real rivalry actually produce good games instead of just good trash talk.
Peyton is done, but San Fran should definitely be looking for a qb. Don’t fall for the Alex Smith trap.
